Secular Institute of Priests Holds International Meeting

Bishop Stima Presides Over Opening Holy Mass

In a solemn and joyous celebration, the Secular Institute of Priests (SIP), also known as OPUS, has convened in Lilongwe for their international gathering. The meeting commenced with the celebration of Holy Mass at Maula Poor Claires Convent Chapel, presided over by Rt. Rev. Montfort Stima, Bishop of the Diocese of Mangochi.

In his homily, Bishop Stima emphasized the apostolic nature of the Catholic Church, exhorting the priests to “preach the Gospel without fear, and with self-abandonment.” This call to evangelical fervor set the tone for the meeting, which promises to be a spirit-filled and transformative experience for the delegates.

Following the Mass, Bishop Stima led the priests to the resting place of the late Archbishop Tarcisius Ziyaye, a revered member of the Institute, who was interred in the Maula Cathedral. A minute of silence was observed, and Bishop Stima led prayers for the continued repose of Archbishop Ziyaye’s soul, as the priests paid their respects to their beloved brother in the Institute.

Delegates Gather for Renewal and Elections

In his opening remarks, Bishop Stima encouraged the priests to use the gifts of the Holy Spirit following God’s will, rather than negatively. “We must use the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the way God wants them to be used, not in a negative way,” he urged.

The meeting, being held at Nsamba Pastoral Centre, has drawn delegates from around the world, including four representatives from the Diocese of Mangochi: Fr. Steven Kamanga, Fr. Titus Bayani, Fr. Danasio Malajira, and Fr. Peter Nkhwayi. During the gathering, elections for new office bearers will take place, with the successful candidates serving for the next six years.

This significant event promises to be a moment of renewal and rejuvenation for the Secular Institute of Priests, as they come together to share their experiences, reflect on their mission, and chart a course for the future.
