A Shepherd in Uniform: Fr. Steven Namame Appointed National Police Chaplain

The Diocese of Mangochi has received with great joy the appointment of Rev. Fr. Steven Namame as National Police Chaplain by the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB).

Ordained on 09 July 2011, Fr. Namame has dedicated himself to serving the Church in many roles characterized by devotion, humility, and a strong commitment to the spiritual well-being of the faithful. At the time of his appointment, he was the Rector of St. Paul the Apostle Minor Seminary in Mangochi, where he oversaw the spiritual and academic development of future priests.

Fr. Namame holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Project Management from DMI St. John the Baptist University, blending academic skills with pastoral experience, essential tools for his new national role.

In his new role, Fr. Namame will provide pastoral care and spiritual guidance to members of the Malawi Police Service and their families across the country. His ministry will include counselling, moral support, and the administration of the sacraments. The police chaplaincy remains a vital mission of the Church, offering strength and hope to officers as they carry out their often challenging and high-pressure duties.

Fr. Namame follows in the footsteps of his predecessors, including Fr. David Bello, who served until 31 December 2015, and Fr. Steven Likhucha of the Diocese of Zomba, who held the role from June 2016. His appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter in the Church’s mission of spiritual accompaniment within the Malawi Police Service.

Widely regarded for his calm demeanour, prayerful spirit, and compassionate heart, Fr. Namame is well-prepared for a ministry that calls for deep empathy and moral integrity.

His appointment not only marks a personal milestone in his priestly journey but also represents a meaningful contribution to the Church’s mission in Malawi. It underscores the Diocese of Mangochi’s commitment to nurturing leaders who serve beyond their immediate communities.

As Fr. Namame embarks on this new chapter, the faithful are encouraged to support him with their prayers, entrusting his ministry to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. May his service bring lasting spiritual fruit and help make Christ’s presence felt within the nation’s law enforcement institutions.
