Fr. Mario Pacifici, SMM: Fifty Years of Faithful Priestly Service

Golden Jubilee, 1976-2026

One cannot speak of Balaka Parish without mentioning Fr. Mario Pacifici, SMM, one of the great sons of the Church. Indeed, his name has become synonymous with Balaka.

Fr. Mario was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood in 1976. The following year, filled with missionary zeal and youthful enthusiasm, he arrived in Malawi as a young Montfort Missionary.

From the moment of his arrival, he showed a profound passion for the youth apostolate. His presence made Balaka Parish a trailblazer in youth ministry within the Diocese of Mangochi.

In 1978, through his inspiration and guidance, the renowned Alleluia Band was born. In the years that followed, it became a household name and one of the greatest musical ensembles in the history of Malawian music.

Recognising the vital role of young people in the life and mission of the Church, Fr. Mario founded the Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT), an umbrella body for many youth initiatives. These include the Alleluia Band, Andiamo Technical College, Andiamo Secondary School, nursery schools, and other youth empowerment programmes.

Desiring to complement government efforts in providing quality health care, he established the Comfort Community Hospital on the Andiamo Campus, bringing healing and hope to many.

Among his most enduring landmarks is the magnificent St. Louis de Montfort Parish Church. Its majestic structure has transformed both the skyline and the spiritual landscape of Balaka.

Fr. Mario has also built numerous primary, secondary and nursery schools, as well as beautiful churches, throughout Balaka Parish. These leave an indelible mark of evangelisation through integral human development.

On 31 October 2026, the Jubilee Mass was celebrated at St. Louis de Montfort Parish Church in Balaka, presided over by Bishop Montfort Stima of Mangochi. The Church joyfully marked 50 years of Fr. Mario’s faithful response to the priestly vocation and 49 years of dedicated missionary service in Malawi, particularly in Balaka. The Mass also celebrated the Silver Jubilee of priesthood of Fr. Louis Nkukumira, SMM, a fellow Montfort Missionary.

On this auspicious occasion of his Golden Priestly Jubilee, the entire Church in Mangochi thanks Almighty God for the gift of Fr. Mario to our Diocese. We pray for his continued good health, renewed strength and abundant graces as he continues to serve the People of God, especially in Balaka. We also congratulate Fr. Louis on 25 years of priestly service and ask God to bless his ministry.

Ad multos annos!
