Legion of Mary’s Spiritual Journey to the Holy Place at St. Peter The Apostle (Utale 1) Parish

In a vibrant display of devotion and spirituality, the Legion of Mary from the Diocese of Mangochi embarked on a pilgrimage to St. Peter the Apostle (Utale 1) Parish on Saturday, May 3, 2025. Led by their Diocesan Chaplain, Fr. Beato Mathyola, the faithful gathered at this revered site as part of the Jubilee Year celebrations, seeking spiritual rejuvenation and divine intercession.

The day’s festivities commenced with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at the parish grotto, followed by a solemn procession to pay homage at the tomb of the late Bishop Auneau, the pioneering Parish Priest of St. Peter the Apostle and former Bishop of the Shire Vicariate. This profound tribute underscored the deep reverence for the bishop’s legacy and the parish’s rich history, dating back to its establishment in 1908 by the French Montfort Fathers.

The pilgrims then proceeded to the parish church, where Fr. Steven Limbani presided over the Holy Mass, while Fr. Beato Mathyola delivered a thought-provoking homily. “As the Legion of Mary, we have chosen this holy place because it is a site of great significance, where the remains of our beloved Bishop Auneau rest,” Fr. Mathyola explained. “The prayers offered here will not go in vain; God is always ready to answer our petitions. There is power in prayer.”

Mayi Prisca Mzunga, Diocesan President of the Legion of Mary, echoed these sentiments, describing the pilgrimage as a “spiritual nourishment” for the members. “We are confident that God will answer our prayers,” she affirmed.

In his remarks, Fr. Limbani exhorted the Legion of Mary members to emulate the Blessed Virgin Mary as their model of Christian life and faith. “Mary’s deep faith, demonstrated during the annunciation, and her selflessness, evident in her visit to Elizabeth and her concern for others at the wedding in Cana, are exemplary virtues for us to follow,” he said.

As one of the oldest parishes in Malawi, St. Peter the Apostle (Utale 1) Parish holds a special place in the hearts of the faithful. This historic site continues to inspire devotion and spiritual growth, as evident in the fervent prayers and joyful celebrations of the Legion of Mary pilgrims.
