Balaka Hosts the Inaugural Diocesan Children’s Congress

Balaka, Malawi Balaka came alive with colour, song, and youthful energy as over 1,500 children from across the Diocese of Mangochi gathered at St. Louis Montfort – Balaka Parish for the first-ever Diocesan Children’s Congress, held from 21st to 23rd November 2025.

Running under the theme “Children, Be One in Christ, United in Mission,” the historic event focused on nurturing the spiritual, moral, and social growth of the young faithful.

A Joyful Opening Rooted in Scripture

Guided by the words of Jesus, “Let the little children come to me” (Matthew 19:14), the children were warmly welcomed by Fr. Paul Rappozo, Diocesan PMS Director, and Fr. Samuel Salatiel, Parish Priest of Balaka.

The congress opened with a solemn Holy Mass presided over by Fr. Eugenio Cucci, who reminded the children of their important place in the Church, saying:
“The future of the Church is in your hands.”

Inspiring Sessions and Vibrant Participation

Throughout the three-day gathering, the children took part in prayer sessions, reflections, learning activities, and interactive presentations.

Highlights included:

  • Fr. Davie Mambo, Vicar General, who delivered a powerful reflection on Liturgy, centering his talk on the Holy Mass.
  • Fr. Paul Rappozo, who offered insights into Church History, helping children appreciate their roots as Catholics.
  • Sr. Mercy, a Canossian Sister, who encouraged children to discern their vocations: “You are the hope of the future.”

The children also enjoyed career inspiration talks from two female professionals:

  • Madam Sera, nurse at Balaka District Hospital
  • Madam Jacqueline, police officer at Balaka Police Station

Dressed in full professional uniform, the two captivated the young audience and encouraged them to work hard in school to achieve their dreams.

Faith, Culture, and Fun

Beyond lessons and prayer, the congress was filled with lively activities:

  • Traditional dances
  • Choir singing
  • Sporting events
  • A scripture quiz based on Questions and Answers from the Bible

The vibrant blend of faith and culture highlighted the joy and unity that defined the congress.

A Grace-Filled Conclusion on Christ the King Sunday

The congress concluded on Sunday, 23rd November, with a special Mass marking the Solemnity of Christ the King, presided over by Rt. Rev. Montfort Stima, Bishop of the Diocese of Mangochi.

In his homily, Bishop Stima reminded the children that by virtue of birth, they are full members of the Children’s Apostolate:

“You are not just a group like a choir. You are the Church — and the future of our world.”

He encouraged the children to emulate the humility and love of Jesus Christ the King and called on them to care for the environment by planting trees at home:

“Put a name on the trees you plant, and next year a gift will be given to whoever’s tree survives.”

Teaching Responsibility and Solidarity

The Bishop also emphasized the importance of PMS money tins, urging children to safeguard them and remember the needs of other children:

“You have a role to minister to one another. Keep your tins sealed and present them properly to the PMS office.”

Looking to the Future

As the Diocese looks forward to hosting the National Children’s Congress in 2027, this inaugural diocesan gathering served as a crucial and joyful rehearsal. The spirit of unity, faith, and mission displayed by the children leaves a strong foundation for the years ahead.

“Train up a child in the way they should go, and when they are old, they will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6).
