Mangochi, Malawi – The Diocese of Mangochi joined the universal Catholic Church in commemorating the World Day of the Sick, coinciding with the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, patroness of the sick, on February 11th. As Pope John Paul II instituted in 1992 (cf. Salvifici Doloris, 3), this day serves as an important reminder of the Church’s mission to care for the vulnerable and suffering.
The solemn celebration took place at Koche Community Hospital, where the local ordinary, Bishop Montfort Stima, presided over the Holy Mass at St. Magdalene of Canossa Parish Church. In his homily, Bishop Stima echoed the words of Pope Francis, emphasizing the dignity of healthcare workers as ministers of God’s mercy (cf. Laudato Si’, 157). Reflecting on the Gospel of St. Luke (10:25-37), the Bishop emphasised the call to be Good Samaritans, tending to the physical and spiritual needs of the sick.
Following the Eucharistic celebration, Bishop Stima led a procession to Koche Community Hospital, where he visited and consoled the sick, lauding the hospital management and Catholic community for their generosity in providing gifts to the patients.
The World Day of the Sick, as Pope John Paul II noted, is an opportunity to “pray for those suffering from illness and their caregivers, reflect on the importance of healthcare and compassion, and support those affected by illness, disability, and healthcare workers” (cf. Message for World Day of the Sick, 1993). The faithful of Mangochi Diocese heeded this call, gathering to pray for healing, comfort, and holistic care for all, invoking the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes.
