Kachebere Major Seminary Marks Cassock Day with Enthusiasm

Mchinji, Malawi — On Valentine’s Day, 14 February 2026, sixty young men from eight dioceses across Malawi took a significant step in their priestly formation as they received their cassocks at St. Anthony’s Kachebere Major Seminary. This symbolic garment, a hallmark of clerical life, signifies their readiness to serve in the Lord’s vineyard (cf. Matthew 9:37–38).

The celebration, a highlight of the seminary’s liturgical calendar, underscored the call to dedicated service, echoing the words of Pope John Paul II: “The priest is called to be a man of God, a man of prayer, a man of service” (Pastores Dabo Vobis, n. 43). The cassock stands as a visible reminder of their consecration to God and their resolve to labour faithfully in His vineyard.

Among those vested were four seminarians from the Diocese of Mangochi: Bester Makoni, Aaron Vumbwa, Chisomo Phiri, and Hope Soko. As they begin this new chapter, they embrace the universal call to holiness, reflecting the Church’s desire for “a new springtime of holiness,” as emphasised by Pope Francis (Gaudete et Exsultate, n. 2).

The Catholic faithful continue to accompany them with prayerful support, mindful of the demands of priestly life yet confident in God’s providence. As St. John Paul II reminded the Church in Gift and Mystery, “The priesthood is not a career, but a calling.” May these young men persevere in their vocation, strengthened by faith, prayer, and steadfast commitment.
