Thirteen Seminarians Ordained to the Diaconate at St. Peter’s Major Seminary, Zomba

ZOMBA – The Catholic Church in Malawi gathered today at St. Peter’s Major Seminary, Zomba, for the Ordination to the Sacred Order of Deacons of thirteen major seminarians drawn from the country’s eight ecclesiastical jurisdictions.

The solemn Eucharistic celebration drew priests, religious men and women, and lay faithful from across Malawi, who came to witness and support the candidates as they embraced this first step towards the priesthood.

Among the ordinands were two sons of St. Francis, members of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, whose presence was a sign of the strong fruitfulness of the Franciscan vocation within the Church in Malawi.

For the Diocese of Mangochi, the celebration was marked by joy as Timothy Phiri from Our Lady of Victories Parish, Nankhwali, was ordained to the diaconate.

The Ordination Mass was presided over by the Principal Celebrant, Rt. Rev. Yohane S. Nyirenda, Bishop of Mzuzu.

Ordination to the diaconate constitutes the first degree of the Sacrament of Holy Orders, through which candidates are configured to Christ the Servant and are called to exercise the ministry of the Word, the Altar, and charity in service of God’s people.
