Mangochi — His Lordship Rt. Rev. Montfort Stima, Bishop of the Diocese of Mangochi, has urged members of the Legion of Mary to emulate the simplicity and humility of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, to be a shining light and hope.
Bishop Stima made the call at the official launch of the 2026 Legion of Mary Annual General Spiritual Meeting at Our Lady of Victories Parish, Nankhwali. The meeting is being held under the theme: “125 Years of Catholic Christianity in Malawi Rooted in Christ.”
In his homily, the Bishop reflected on the Legion’s charism of evangelisation and service, noting that Mary’s fiat and quiet fidelity remain the model for all lay apostles. “As legionaries, you are called to be the light of the nation through lives of prayer, simplicity, and apostolic zeal after the example of Our Lady,” he said.
Also addressing the gathering, Very Rev. Msgr. Henry Chinkanda commended the Legionaries for selecting Our Lady of Victories Parish, Nankhwali, as the venue for this year’s meeting. He recalled the parish’s significant place in the history of Catholicism in Malawi.
“The very name ‘Our Lady of Victories’ reminds us of Christ’s triumph over sin and the devil, and of the missionary courage that planted the faith in this land 125 years ago,” Msgr. Chinkanda said.
Ms. Prisca Nzunga, President of the Mangochi Regia, appealed for increased priestly accompaniment, particularly in facilitating annual retreats for legionaries in the various parishes across the diocese.
The Annual General Spiritual Meeting has drawn delegates from nearly all parishes within the Diocese of Mangochi. The spiritual gathering will run until Sunday, 9th August 2026, and will conclude with the celebration of Holy Mass.
